LETHBRIDGE – The Lethbridge Hurricanes threw everything they could at the Red Deer Rebels in the last 40 minutes of Friday (Jan. 18) night’s game but couldn’t solve goaltender Ethan Anders who made 35 saves in a 3-1 win.

It was a tough start in the 1st period for Lethbridge, with three straight minor penalties but the Hurricanes killed them off to keep things scoreless.

Then with 32 seconds left in the first, Jeff DeWit got the ice breaker beating Hurricanes goaltender Liam Hughes to make it 1-0 Red Deer.

That’s how things would stand after the opening period. Shots in the first also favoured Red Deer 10-9.

The 2nd was much the same as the 1st, with both teams trading chances but both Hughes and Anders continued standing tall.

That was until just after the 13-minute mark when Hurricanes captain Jordy Bellerive took a pass from Nick Henry and beat Anders to even things up 1-1.

Just over four minutes later, with Jake Elmer in the penalty box for roughing, the Rebels struck on the power play to make it 2-1. Chris Douglas would get the goal for Red Deer.

That’s where things stood after two periods of play, despite the Hurricanes outshooting the Rebels 14-6 in the middle frame.

Lethbridge had three power plays in the 3rd, and they made Anders work, but on this night they couldn’t solve the Rebels starting goaltender.

With under 30 seconds to play, Cameron Hausinger added an empty net goal to complete the 3-1 final for Red Deer.

Final shots finished at 36-24 for Lethbridge, which went 0-for-4 on the power play while Red Deer finished 1-for-6 on the man advantage.

With the win, the Rebels move into second place in the Central Division ahead of the Hurricanes who now sit in third place.

The rematch between these two teams goes tomorrow night in Red Deer.
