LETHBRIDGE – A night after Red Deer Rebels goaltender Ethan Anders stole the show in Lethbridge, it would be Hurricanes netminder Carl Tetachuk repaying the favour on the road making 35 saves to backstop his team to a 2-1 win on Saturday, Jan. 19.

The 1st period maintained a good pace, with both clubs trading chances to open the scoring early in the hockey game.

Red Deer would get the ice breaker on the powerplay when Jeff de Wit tipped an Alexander Alexeyev shot past Tetachuk at the 12:27 mark to make it 1-0. That would be all the scoring in the opening frame, but not for a lack of trying for the home team as the Rebels outshot the Hurricanes 18-9 in the period.

Lethbridge was on their heels early in the 2nd period, as Red Deer began with a carryover powerplay, but despite some good chances and a goal post by Brandon Hagel they were unable to capitalize thanks to the performance of Tetachuk in the Hurricanes crease.

Jake Leschyshyn midway through the middle frame would end a seven-game goalless drought, potting his team-leading 26th goal of the season past Anders to make it 1-1. The Hurricanes took over the second half of the period, but could only find the one goal. Shots were 10-8 in favour of Lethbridge in the 2nd period.

Both teams continued trading chances early in the 3rd period, as Alexeyev had a great chance midway through but once again Tetachuk stood tall to keep the game tied 1-1.

Not long after the big stop by Tetachuk, the guys in front of him would answer. It was a night of snapped goalless droughts, as Jackson Shepard ended a streak of 15-games without a goal by beating Anders for only his third goal of the season on a two-on-one at 9:52 to make it 2-1 Hurricanes.

The Rebels pushed at the end, but were they unable to solve Tetachuk who helped Lethbridge hold onto the 2-1 victory.

Shots on goal in the third period favoured the Hurricanes 12-10, but the Rebels held the overall edge in shots at 36-31. Lethbridge finished 0-for-3 on the power play while Red Deer went 1-for-4 with the man advantage.

With the win, the Hurricanes improved to 24-13-4-4 on the season, and for the time being, moved past the Rebels back into second place in the Central Division.

Lethbridge will continue their four-game road swing on Friday, Jan. 25 when they begin a three-in-three weekend in Seattle against the Thunderbirds.
