PORTLAND – The Lethbridge Hurricanes three-game in three-night stretch south of the border ended without much fanfare as they were shutout 3-0 on Sunday, Jan. 27, against the Portland Winterhawks.

A penalty-filled 1st period came and went without any scoring, with the Winterhawks outshooting the Hurricanes 11-8 thanks to a couple of power plays.

Early in the 2nd period, the game would see its first goal, with Portland’s  Jake Gricius beating Hurricanes starting goaltender Carl Tetachuk to make it 1-0 at 4:32.

The middle frame would see all of the game’s three goals, as just over five minutes later it would be Gricius again this time shorthanded while Lethbridge was on the powerplay to make it 2-0.

Portland would add an insurance goal to increase their lead to 3-0 at 16:36 courtesy of Seth Jarvis’ 14th of the season.

The Hurricanes actually outshot the Winterhawks 18-7 in the 2nd, despite the three goals against.

In the 3rd period, Lethbridge mustered 10 more shots on net but couldn’t beat Portland goaltender Joel Hofer who made 36 saves in the shutout victory.

Lethbridge’s record falls to 25-15-4-4 on the season with the loss, and they’ll have a chance to rest this week before hosting the Red Deer Rebels on Friday, Feb. 1.
