Manure Tracking – there’s an app for that

CALGARY —  When people say “There’s likely an app for that”…chances are they never considered manure tracking.  But, there is… an app… for that.

ManureTracker is a new farm management tool created through the partnership of Alberta Agriculture and Forestry, Alberta Milk, Alberta Beef Producers, Alberta Pork, the Intensive Livestock Working Group and the Natural Resources Conservation Board.

Trevor Wallace, Nutrient Management Specialist at Alberta Agriculture and Forestry,  says it’s like any other app that’s running on your phone.

“Either an android or an apple system and it’s really just to help with manure recordkeeping, manure transfers and communication and collection of information about the manure spreading activities you do on-farm.”

Wallace notes there are numerous features included in the new management gaget.

“It becomes a tool not just for record keeping, but for communication and information sharing, as it uses our Aces weather network.  It will collect the weather information for a few days prior to the manure application, and it will collect it for a few days after that the manure application.”

“That way, if anybody came and said they thought your application smelled, you can show that, well no, the day I was spreading, the wind was blowing east, so it wasn’t me.”

According to Wallace, the program’s ability to select fields is another important feature.

“Basically, we’re using Google maps, and it allows you to drop a pin in that field and when you do that, it generates an address for that field and the legal land descrption.  And it saves all that kind of information on the phone – very easy collection and retention of data.”

The usability doesn’t end there.

“When it comes to one of the features we created, which was putting a request out for a custom applicator to come, that information is provided to them so they get the field location, the legal land description, the other features we’ve created in it, both from a record-keeping point of view and the ability to put in comments, you can put in your livestock type, and photogrpahs.”

Nutrient and soil tests are additional features incorporated in the ManureTracker app, which are free and downloadable.
