LETHBRIDGE – About 250 of the city’s most talented and influential home building industry contractors, tradespeople, sales people, dignitaries and others, gathered for the 20th annual Building Industry and Land Development Association awards at the Coast Hotel Friday evening. The night celebrated the best in home design, development, safety, renovations, best single family homes, and of course best builder and custom builder of the year.

The night kicked off with speeches from Joey Baranyay, BILD Lethbridge President, and government officials including Lethbridge East MLA Maria Fitzpatrick, MP Rachel Harder and Mayor Chris Spearman.
One of the common themes that emerged was that the industry is and was facing some difficult economic times, mainly because of new Federal Mortgage stress tests, resulting in fewer new homes bought overall.

However, another theme of resilience also emerged. Fitzpatrick, in particular, commented on the province’s commitment to help builders in the coming years.

“I see the work that has been done. And the quality of the work the has been done…I do want to thank you all for the work that you do to make Lethbridge the incredible city that it is. And I know… you’re facing challenges and I’ve had conversations with the mayor, had a very good conversation with Bridget (Mearns) about what you’re facing right now. And I will do everything that I can to support your industry.”

Mayor Chris Spearman talked about how the city might help, including reducing red tape at City Hall, creating more municipal government efficiencies, and creating a new Municipal Housing Strategy.

“Certainly we fully understand that every city, every community in Alberta the stress the housing industry’s under right now, and you have given so much to our province and to our city… it’s key that we keep a healthy industry.”
