Frigid weekend temperatures resulted in increased service calls for the AMA

EDMONTON, AB – The Alberta Motor Association (AMA) says it has received a record number of calls for service since temperatures in the province plunged on the weekend.

It says it has received more than 31,000 requests for roadside assistance — including a surge in dead battery calls in rural areas that was nearly nine times higher than average.

The AMA says in a release that additional dispatchers, call centre staff, and service vehicle operators have been called in to help out — with cold arctic air expected to remain entrenched across much of Alberta until Thursday.

Edmonton police have taken to social media to ask motorists to drive for extreme winter road conditions after 518 collisions were reported between 4 p.m. Friday and midnight Sunday.
