Medals unveiled for 2019 Canada Winter Games

RED DEER —  The medals athletes will be competing for at the 2019 Canada Winter Games in Red Deer have been unveiled.

It was really special. I’m not an athlete myself, I’m just a simple farm kid, who turned into a designer,” said Edmonton resident Tyler Vreeling, who led the design team that spent several months coming up with the medals.

“It’s been awesome. What I hope for is every athlete who earns a medal will be able to use this as a memento to remember the experience, the rush and the ride they had here. Remember this moment into the future and that will inspire them to go onto bigger and better things.”

Vreeling said inspiration for the medal design came from the landscapes of Central Alberta, including the Red Deer River.

The back of the medals feature stars, something Vreeling added as a nod to the hard work of the athletes that will don the medals throughout the games.

The medal design also honours Indigenous and Métis Communities in Central Alberta.

More than 1,000 medals will be awarded during the 2019 Canada Winter Games.
