TABER — One death and several people with serious injuries resulted from the Wednesday (Feb 20) morning two-vehicle collision.  It happened around 9:25 a.m., on Highway 36 north of Highway 61.

A preliminary investigation determined that a southbound truck collided head-on with a northbound van, on snow-covered and icy roads, during blowing snow.

Tragically, the driver of the van, a 39-year-old man, died at the scene. A 27-year-old woman in the van and one child were taken by ambulance to hospital, suffering serious but non-life threatening injuries

An additional child with serious life-threatening injuries was transported via STARS to Calgary.

The 60-year-old female driver of the truck was transported via HALO to hospital with serious injuries.

Highway 36 was closed for several hours as multiple emergency teams from the surrounding area responded after a request for ‘Mutual Aid” from the Wrentham and Stirling  Fire Departments. The M-D of Taber Regional Fire service sent two units. A landing zone was established on the highway for both STARS and HALO helicopters as emergency crews extracted victims from the vehicles.

RCMP indicate the name of the deceased will not be released.
