MEDICINE HAT  — After doubling the Medicine Hat Tigers 6-3 on home ice Friday night, the Canes’ back end of the home and home produced a 5-0 shutout.

The Canes opened scoring less than three minutes in, as Nick Henry notched his 23rd of the season off the assist by Jake Leschyshyn and Ty Prefontaine.  Midway through the period, Leschshyn pulled-down back-to-back minor penalties. The first, unsportsmanlike conduct, was served by Noah Boyko and the second was for interference on the goaltender.

The period came to a close with the Hurricanes leading 1-0.

If the first period offered minimal opportunities, the second saw the Canes blow over their opponents.  Roughly nine minutes into play, Dylan Cozens added his 29th of the season on a power play.   Six minutes later, Jake Elmer tallied his 31st of the season and in the final minute and a half of play, Calen Addison flipped the puck between the pipes on an assist from Nick Henry and Jake Leschyshyn.

After 40 minutes of play, the Tigers led the Canes 26-22 in shots-on-goal – but, the Canes led in scoring 4-0.

In the final 20 minutes of play, the Canes maintained control.  Just over a minute in, Calen Addison put down his second goal of the game, taking the score to 5-0, which was, eventually, the final score.

While there was great scoring in the game, and the Canes were 1/3 on the power play and 3/3 on the penalty kill, the real hero was Carl Tetachuk, who made 35 saves and his first career shutout – good enough for first Star.

The improve puts the Canes at 32-17-5-5 on the season and the team sits second in the Central Division, with a seven-point lead on the Tigers.

The Hurricanes’ next game is Tuesday when visit the Saskatoon Blades.
