Alberta breaks medal record on penultimate day of 2019 Games

RED DEER — Team Alberta has officially had its most successful Canada Winter Games in history.

 With five medals on Friday, Alberta surpassed its personal all-time mark of 91 medals, which was set at the 2003 Games in Bathurst-Campbellton, New Brunswick.

Alberta sat at 93 heading into the final day of competition Saturday, including 34 gold 32 silver, and 27 bronze.

The 34 golds are also a new record for Team Alberta, the previous high being 31 set at the Grande Prairie 1995 Games.

Gold – Judo Team Event Women
Gold – Snowboard Halfpipe Women – Kamilla Kozuback, Calgary
Gold – Snowboard Halfpipe Men – Liam Gill, Calgary
Bronze – Judo Team Event Men
Bronze – Snowboard Halfpipe Women – Kianah Hyatt-Sikora, Calgary

With the medals Friday, Alberta brought its total earned from Judo to 14, an increase of six from the last Winter Games in Prince George.

Also on Friday, Team Alberta defeated its foes from BC to advance to the Women’s Hockey Final. Then, on Saturday, the women’s team downed Quebec 2-1 to wind the gold medal.

Saturday morning, Alberta was third in the medal standings with 94; Ontario has 100, and Quebec has 141. Alberta has the second most gold with 35 to Quebec’s 64. BC is the next closest with 28.

The Closing Ceremony begins Saturday night at 6:30 at the Westerner Park Centrium.
