Notley calls election, voters head to polls on April 16

CALGARY, AB – Albertans will head to the polls on April 16.

Premier Rachel Notley has officially called the provincial election at an event this morning in Calgary.

The announcement comes one day after the speech from the throne, marking the start of the spring legislature session.

Health care was a major focus during the speech. Notley’s NDP has promised to continue funding growth in the health system. The government also committed to building more schools, get more value from the province’s natural resources, improving education and bringing forward a new program to help mothers and familis save thousands of dollars a year and rejoin the workforce. 

Notley has served as Alberta’s Premier since 2015. During her time in office, one of the biggest moves taken by her NDP government was the implementation of the $15 minimum wage, the highest in Canada. 

This upcoming election is the first for the United Conservative Party and its leader Jason Kenney. The party was born out of a merger of the Alberta Tories and what was the Opposition Wildrose Party.

By law, the election had to be held by May 31. 

Elections Alberta has announced advanced voting days as:

  • Tuesday, April 9
  • Wednesday, April 10
  • Thursday, April 11
  • Friday, April 12
  • Saturday, April 13

Boundary maps can be found here. Criteria to vote is as follows: voters must be a Canadian citizen, an ordinarily resident in Alberta and at least 18 years of age on Election Day.
