Lethbridge Speed Skaters busy competing in national events

LETHBRIDGE, AB – It’s been a busy couple of weeks for Lethbridge Speed Skating Association athletes.

Kaleb Muller recently wrapped up a successful long track season by competing on the Olympic Oval in Calgary at the Grand Prix on March 8 to 10 and then the Canada Cup #4/Olympic Oval Finale on March 14 to 17.

These races saw Muller compete in 500m, 1000m, 1500m, 3000m and 5000, distances and achieve personal best times in the 500m and 3000m at the Grand Prix. Both events featured skaters from Canada, China, Norway, the United States, Australia, the Netherlands, Kazakhstan and Sweden.

The Canada Cup competitions are selection events, and ranking points are granted to the top 32 skaters in each distance.

The women’s distances are 500 meters, 1000 metres, 1500 metres, 3000 metres and 5000 metres and the men’s distances are 500 meters, 1000 metres, 1500 metres, 3000 metres (junior), 5000 metres and 10,000 metres.

Time standards are required to gain entry into the Canada Cup event

Aaron Cooney, meanwhile, finished a busy short track season at the Canadian Junior Selections in Sherbrooke, Quebec on March 15 to 17. He raced 500m, 1000m and 1500m distances against Junior skaters from across Canada.

Finally, five skaters have been named to Team Alberta for the Canada West Short Track Championships being held in Grande Prairie, AB this weekend.
