VANCOUVER — The Toronto Tempo will be without guard Brittney Sykes and forward Aneesah Morrow for the rest of the season.

Head coach Sandy Brondello says both players have been ruled out after leaving Friday's 82-79 win over the Portland Fire in Vancouver with injuries.

"Pretty tough luck this year, isn't it?" she said before the Tempo faced the Las Vegas Aces on Sunday.

Sykes played just one minute 31 seconds in the first quarter of Friday's matchup before exiting with a foot injury. She was in just her second game back after missing eight weeks with a left plantar fascia injury.

Morrow hurt her left knee midway through the second after getting tangled up with Fire forward Emily Engstler under the Portland basket. Morrow stayed on the hardwood for several minutes being evaluated by Tempo staff before she was carried off the court in tears.

While the ailments will keep Sykes and Morrow out of Toronto's final eight games of the season, neither will require long recoveries, Brondello said.

Guard Marina Mabrey (right adductor) did not play against Portland and will not be in the lineup against the reigning WNBA champion on Sunday.

The 29-year-old all star will be evaluated "in a few weeks," Brondello said, and she's unsure whether Mabrey will play again this season.

Toronto (11-25) has struggled with injuries throughout its inaugural campaign, and will also miss forwards Maria Conde (left calf) and Nyara Sabally (left calf) for Sunday's tilt against Las Vegas.

Limitied availability has changed Brondello's coaching plans this season.

"I suppose right now makes it really easy to rotate, doesn't it? No stress there," she said. "Look, what can you do? You just go with what you can and be mindful of not overloading them. I think that's important for me. And sometimes there's lineups out there that typically I wouldn't have out there, but I have no other solution."

Toronto will activate forward Ornella Bankole for Sunday's game.

The team signed the five-foot-11 wing to a developmental contract on June 29 after she played the 2025-26 season for Casademont Zaragoza in Spain.

The team found out on Saturday that it cannot sign any additional players to hardship contracts this season, Brondello said.

While Toronto is missing several players due to injuries and will not get them back before their final game of the season on Sept. 24, the players could technically be healthy and ready to play before the end of the WNBA playoffs, making the team ineligible for additional signings, the coach said.

NEW YORK (AP) — Ben Rice hit a bases-loaded single to score two runs and cap a three-run sixth inning, and the New York Yankees pulled away for an 8-3 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays on Sunday.

The Yankees knocked out Toronto starter José Soriano (10-7) by opening the sixth with three straight singles, including a bunt by Jazz Chisholm Jr. that loaded the bases. After Braydon Fisher got the first two outs, Trent Grisham took a 3-2 slider that was low and inside for a go-ahead walk.

Rice also reached a full count against left-hander Mason Fluharty and lined a slider to right field for a 5-2 lead.

Chisholm added a two-run homer in the seventh and Grisham homered in the eighth as the Yankees earned a win by at least five runs for the third time since the All-Star break.

Rookie Spencer Jones had an RBI double in the second and also made a diving catch in right field on Alejandro Kirk’s sinking liner in the sixth. Austin Wells added an RBI double in the second as the Yankees won for the sixth time in seven games.

New York finished with double-digit hits for the third time in five games after getting no-hit for 6 2/3 innings on Saturday by Dylan Cease.

New York starter Carlos Rodón allowed two runs – one earned -- and two hits in four innings. Still on a pitch count in his second start off the injured list, the left-hander threw 76 pitches, including 12 more after a fielding error by rookie shortstop George Lombard Jr. in the fourth on Ernie Clement’s grounder.

Paul Blackburn (5-2) pitched two innings for the win.

Rookie Brett Bateman and Daz Cameron lifted sacrifice flies for Toronto. Kirk added an RBI single in the eighth.

Soriano allowed five runs and seven hits in five-plus innings. The right-hander struck out seven and walked three.

MONTREAL — There will not be a third straight title for Canada's Melissa Humana-Paredes and Brandie Wilkerson at the Montreal stop of the Elite16 beach volleyball circuit.

The Toronto pair fell 2-1 to Brazilian duo Thamela Coradello and Victoria Lopes in women's semifinal action Sunday.

Set scores were 19-21, 22-20 and 15-7.

Humana-Paredes and Wilkerson claimed the 2023 and 2025 Montreal titles, winning Olympic silver in between. The Elite 16 tour did not have a Montreal stop in 2024.

The pair were tied 1-1 with Svenja Muller and Cinja Tillmann of Germany in the women's third-place game when it was suspended due to weather.

In men's action Sam Schachter of Richmond Hill, Ont., and Jonathan Pickett of Wiarton, Ont., finished a strong tournament by defeating Hendrik Mol and Mathias Berntsen of Norway in the bronze medal match, 2-1 (16-21, 28-26, 15-12).

This was a first majors or Elite tournament win for Schachter teaming with Josh Binstock for silver at the FIVB Porec Major in Croatia in June 2015.

Schachter and Pickett played in the third-place game after a narrow 2-1 (21-19, 16-21, 16-14) loss to Andre Loyola Stein and Renato Lima de Carvalho of Brazil.

On Saturday, the Canadians upset top-ranked Jacob Holting Nilsson and Elmer Andersson in the quarterfinals.

"Today it was the shifting of the strategies throughout the match," Picket said of the third-place win. "As you can see in the first set nothing was really working. There was a big score difference and then in the second and third set we changed strategies.

"A couple of reminders to ourselves on blocking and serving … little tweaks and no hesitation, we fully executed."

Coradello and Lopes were set to take on Americans Kristen Cruz and Taryn Brasher while Lima de Carvalho and Loyola Stein were scheduled to face Norway's Anders Mol and Christian Sorum.

CONAKRY, Guinea (AP) — A mountainous heap of refuse collapsed at the largest landfill in Guinea 's capital of Conakry early on Sunday, killing 30 people, according to the central government.

Authorities said that heavy rains, which started at around 2 a.m., washed over the refuse at Dar Es Salam — the largest landfill in Conakry — and triggered a landslide that buried nearby shacks. A search and rescue operation was underway to find survivors. Six people were seriously injured and several homes were destroyed.

The site, an open-air waste dump which is the largest in the city, had been designated for closure on Sunday, according to Lt. Col. Baldé Mamadou Bailo, the sanitation officer for the military engineering battalion.

Locals living around the landfill had been given eviction notices, which forced many to leave the area, but many others were still around at the time of the disaster, according to authorities.

"We will ensure that the remaining families are relocated elsewhere,” Dienabou Touré, the minister of territorial administration and decentralization, said at the scene.

Guinea is mineral-rich with huge deposits of bauxite — the largest in the world — and also has iron ore, gold, diamonds and minerals. However, according to the World Bank, 43.7% of the population lives below the national poverty line.

OTTAWA - Federal conservatives are calling on the government to release the full details of the trade offer from the United States that Canada rejecte...

OTTAWA — Federal conservatives are calling on the government to release the full details of the trade offer from the United States that Canada rejected this week.

In a letter to Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc, Canada-U.S. relations critic Shuvaloy Majumdar said while his party supports the government's decision to reject the deal, Parliament is in the dark on what was on the table.

"If there was a draft text of any agreement that both governments have seen, please release it. The U.S. administration has seen it. Your government has seen it. Canadians deserve to see it," Majumdar wrote.

"Even after addressing Canadians and the media, the public and Members of Parliament still remain in the dark on your government's demands in negotiations with the Trump administration.

Majumdar said he's not asking for "negotiating secrets," but rather information that both the Canadian and U.S. governments already know.

A spokesperson for the Bloc Québécois wouldn't say whether they support the calls for the government to detail what the Americans were offering. But the party reiterated calls for a meeting between the "recognized" party leaders in the House of Commons to get a briefing on the situation.

"Canadians expect elected officials to collaborate in this moment, which is why we've made this request," Julien Coulombe-Bonnafous told The Canadian Press in French, adding the Liberals haven't responded to those calls.

In an interview with The Canadian Press, Green Party Leader Elizabeth May also said the party leaders should be briefed, but stopped short of demanding the trade details be made public.

"I think we should have at least a Zoom call or Teams meeting as we used to do under the former prime minister to make sure that we are all updated," May said.

"I don't care so much about what was on the table. I think we can read the tea leaves, we can see what was there. I think it was a bad deal and it was good we walked away. But the next steps and holding us united, it's really important that we choose areas where we will land with consensus."

Don Davies, the NDP leader in the House of Commons, said the government looping in MPs could strengthen Canada's position.

Davies said parliament should be the ones ratifying all trade deals, regardless if the governing party has a minority or majority.

"It's up to the government to negotiate and bring it back, but it's up to parliament, I think, to weigh in on it have final say," Davies told The Canadian Press.

Prime Minister Mark Carney suspended trade talks with the United States on Friday after accusing the U.S. administration of introducing measures in the final hours of negotiations that restricted Canada's ability to do deals with other countries.

At a news conference Saturday, Carney told reporters the U.S. had also added terms near the end of negotiations that restricted Canada's protections of language and culture.

He also said the U.S. offered to lower tariffs on autos in exchange for other concessions, but said the offer didn't include medium and heavy trucks.

"With respect to Ford's new plant, for example, in Oakville, which is F-350s, 450s, 550s, they would have been excluded. GM, Silverado, same thing, would have been excluded from that," Carney told reporters.

"No rationale, just for exclusion. So effectively moving into a series of terms that would have made the production more uneconomic over time."

In an interview with the New York Times on Saturday, U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said the Americans offered, in part, to cut the 10 per cent tariffs on softwood lumber, and lower steel and aluminum tariffs from 50 to 25 per cent.

Greer also told the paper the U.S. offered to suspend the additional 50 per cent tariffs that U.S. President Donald Trump had threatened a month ago, paused earlier this week, and then ultimately enforced Saturday once talks fell apart.

Spokespeople for both the prime minister and LeBlanc's offices declined to comment on Greer's claims, deferring instead to Carney's remarks to reporters from Saturday.

In a post on his Truth Social account, Trump returned to mocking Canada as another U.S. state, saying "Canada wants the benefits of being a state, without being one."

A fast-growing wildfire destroying homes in northwest Reno, Nevada, on Sunday was human-caused and uncontained, authorities said, as they encouraged some 90,000 people to evacuate. At least six people were injured.

The Hawk Fire began Saturday and quickly grew to 20 square miles (53 sq. km.) as it spread across the Peavine Peak area of the Humboldt–Toiyabe National Forest, where rugged foothills are ringed by homes and businesses near the California state line.

The fire moved exceptionally fast Saturday night, jumping over fire trucks and making it difficult for responders to get to hotspots while residents were trying to get out, Washoe County Sheriff Darin Balaam said.

“It was extremely confusing,” the sheriff said, describing how changing winds sent the flames in different directions.

Several structures were destroyed and the injured included three civilians and three first responders, officials said. They did not provide additional details on how the fire was started, saying it was under investigation.

An unpredictable fire expands the danger zone

Some 42,000 residents have been ordered evacuated as the “GO NOW” zone expanded, reaching the edge of the University of Nevada. An additional 45,000 people were in the adjacent evacuation warning zone. Authorities implored all of them to leave and be prepared to stay away for several days, because shifting and strengthening winds were expected to make the fire even more unpredictable.

“Please get out if you can right now,” the sheriff said.

Nevada Gov. Joe Lombardo declared a state of emergency in Washoe County and mobilized the Nevada National Guard to support aerial firefighting with two helicopter crews as well as 60 troops to help police safeguard evacuated neighborhoods. Also responding were 800 fire personnel.

Nearly 10,000 customers were without power in Washoe County on Sunday, down from 60,000 on Saturday. Portions of U.S. Route 395, a major north-south highway, were closed due to the fire. Reno, with more than 280,000 residents, is the largest city in Nevada outside of metro Las Vegas.

Washoe County emergency officials opened the Reno-Sparks Convention Center to evacuees, but said they couldn’t bring their pets — small animals and large animals were to be left at two other locations. Casinos in Reno offered discounts on hotel rooms to evacuees.

A family raced to grab possessions but lost their home

Cari Kieffer said a video posted on social media showed her house entirely burned down, with only a scorched basketball hoop still standing.

“I woke up this morning and just started crying — all my kids, they lost everything,” Kieffer said Sunday. “We lost all our stuff. Everything we own is gone.”

Kieffer had been watching her son’s football game Saturday when she learned that their home on the outskirts of Reno was in the evacuation zone. An application the family used to track the fire’s progress had been lagging significantly behind its actual location, she said, so they thought firefighters had kept the blaze from their neighborhood.

Instead, Kieffer, her husband and their four children ages 3 to 16 raced to save their dogs and whatever possessions they could retrieve. Ash rained down, and the wind blew like an oven blast from a wall of flames advancing down the hillside toward their neighborhood, she said.

“I kept looking outside and the flames just kept getting closer and closer every time I looked,” Kieffer said. “I was like, we gotta go like now.”

Eyes watering and throat burning, Kieffer grabbed a handful of clothes, a Bible, her wedding photos and her mother’s ashes. In the frenzy, as firefighters yelled at her family to leave immediately, she said she forgot her family’s birth certificates and was unable to salvage her childhood photos.

The family drove to a friend’s home but had to evacuate again. They learned later Saturday evening that their own home was gone.

A mountaintop home goes up in flames

Jaida Hargrove’s grandfather, Rick Arrate, lived alone on Peavine Mountain, which overlooks Reno and Sparks. Firefighters used a bulldozer, cut down trees and applied fire retardant in their attempt to contain the flames, Hargrove said.

“They all thought it would be OK,” she said. “And then, in about 30 minutes, the winds just changed and it came way too fast.”

Arrate and the firefighters were quickly forced off the mountain. “All he was able to take with him was his two golden retrievers,” Hargrove said.

Arrate spent Saturday night with Hargrove’s parents, his next steps unknown.

Separate GoFundMe crowdfunding campaigns were set up to assist Arrate and the Kieffer family.

The fire wasn’t troubling to some at first

The fire was so small Saturday morning that it wasn’t even a concern, said Tyler Duvall, who went camping over the weekend. By the next day, his house was in the evacuation zone.

“The wind really blew it up,” Duvall said.

On Saturday alone, 15 new fires popped up across Nevada. Months of dry weather and a record lack of snow this past winter across the American West have created prime fire conditions. Earlier this month, wildfires in eastern Washington state forced the evacuation of 60,000 people in the Spokane area, while three wildfires north of Reno forced more than 13,000 residents from their homes.

A Nevada transplant gets a rude welcome to Reno

Retired police officer and firefighter Ted Melden has seen his share of Mother Nature’s fury since moving to Reno with his wife earlier this month from Chapin, South Carolina. So far, he has experienced a hailstorm with flash flooding, two different power outages and, now, the second wildfire incident in the region in two weeks.

“Just another natural disaster,” Melden said.

In the two years he lived in South Carolina, Melden said Hurricane Helene knocked over trees in his yard, while a tornado did some damage in his neighborhood.

For now, Melden hasn’t been ordered to leave his home, but he has his bags packed just in case.

“You just have to roll with the flow and be ready,” he said.

David Barb returned from a weekend hunting trip to find the fire had leveled his taxidermy shop, but his house nearby appeared to have been spared thanks to workers with a landscaping company who cut a fire break, he said. His wife was home when the fire started on the other side of the mountain and later evacuated to a friend’s house.

“I’m kind of devastated, but thank God everyone’s safe,” he said Sunday.

Places just outside the evacuation zone are keeping watch

The University of Nevada, where many of the 20,000 undergraduates moved into their housing this weekend, was just outside the evacuation zone Sunday.

Two hospitals evacuated patients and the sheriff said his office was keeping a close watch on whether to evacuate the county jail.
