Alberta will not impose new COVID-19 restrictions as cases rise: Kenney

CALGARY – Premier Jason Kenney says Alberta will not follow Ontario’s lead in imposing new COVID-19 restrictions because of a jump in cases.

The new restrictions in Toronto, Peel Region, and Ottawa include a ban on indoor dining at restaurants and bars that goes into effect tomorrow.

Gyms, movie theatres, and casinos will be closed.

Infection numbers have also spiked in Alberta, especially in Edmonton.

Despite the increase, Kenney says his government will continue to take a lighter approach when it comes to restrictions.

He believes the province can’t enforce its way out of the pandemic and needs to rely on Albertans to be responsible.

Kenney asserts the new restrictions would have a negative impact on the economic, psychological, and mental state of Albertans.

He says there is no plan to make new voluntary restrictions in Edmonton mandatory to help reduce the spread of COVID-19.

They include limiting private gatherings to 15 people, wearing masks when working indoors, and limiting how many different groups people associate with.
