Warmer temps to end this week, “normal” winter expected in Southern Alberta

LETHBRIDGE, AB – You would not know it looking outside in recent days and weeks, but December is nearly here.

A ridge of high pressure and strong Chinook winds have brought double-digit temperatures lately to Southern Alberta, which Environment Canada Meteorologist Kyle Fougere says is “quite abnormal for this time of year.”

The region had a very mild and dry fall with above-normal temperatures, “but that ends this week.”

Fougere explains that we are set to have a low-pressure system come in on Thursday, which will result in more seasonal norms for the beginning of December.

He tells LNN that temperatures will dip a bit over the next couple of weeks with snowfall that will stick to the ground.

The mercury will be about normal throughout December, but there might be a little more snow than we would typically see.

“For our December, January, February three-month forecast, it’s the same trend as December where we’re expecting above-average precipitation over the winter months, but temperatures remaining near or possibly slightly above normal.”

Anyone looking to travel during the next couple of weeks is advised to check Environment Canada and Alberta 511 for up-to-date conditions.
