Ottawa announces $5.8-million to help build Lethbridge’s curbside compost facility

LETHBRIDGE, AB – A major update in Lethbridge’s efforts to establish a curbside organics collection and processing program.

A grant of $5,879,000 has been awarded to the City of Lethbridge from the federal government’s Canada Community Building Fund. The funding stream is administered by the provincial government.

The money will be used to offset construction costs for the organic waste compost facility.

“Each year, our government seeks to provide key infrastructure investment dollars in partnership with the federal government to our local municipalities,” says Lethbridge-East MLA Nathan Neudorf. “The City of Lethbridge has identified the need for a composting facility, and we have allocated these funds to meet that need. I look forward to this project being completed and benefitting the lives of those who live and work in Lethbridge.”

Back in November 2021, the Alberta Government announced $4.75-million in funding for this initiative, meaning, between the two levels of government, the $10,629,000 project will be fully funded.

At this week’s city council meeting, officials said about 1,015,092 had already been spent.

This spring, the city looks to start a pilot project for the green bins with about 2,000 homes taking part.

By spring 2023, they hope to implement curbside organics collection city-wide.
