LETHBRIDGE, AB – Residents of Lethbridge are set to see their property taxes going up.

Bylaw 6397, or the 2023 Municipal Property Tax Bylaw, was approved by Lethbridge city council on May 2, 2023.

It implements changes to taxation that were approved as part of the 2023-2026 operating budget in November 2022.

Property owners are set to see their municipal tax bills increase by 5.1 per cent in 2023.

As well, the 2023 provincial education tax levy will rise by 2.86 per cent, while the 2023 Green Acres tax levy will by 5.44 per cent higher. These amounts are set by the Government of Alberta, not the City of Lethbridge.

Council also approved the pre-authorized tax installment pre-payment plan (TIPP). By paying their property taxes over 10 monthly installments, TIPP gives residents a discount of two per cent.

According to the City of Lethbridge, the average assessed value for residential properties increased by six per cent, while the market value of non-residential buildings went up by 2.4 per cent. Multi-family residential dwellings saw a decrease in assessed value of 0.3 per cent.

Property tax notices will be mailed out on May 24, 2023, and will be due on June 30.

More details on property taxes are on the City of Lethbridge website.
