Fort Whoop Up Artifacts to be Moved Elsewhere in Alberta

LETHBRIDGE – Following past grievances with the City of Lethbridge, the Fort Whoop Up Interpretive Society has decided to move its artifacts elsewhere in the region.

The Fort Whoop Up Interpretive Society ran the replica site in the river valley for 40 years, until the city told them they would have to submit a proposal to continue operations. The Society didn’t apply and the Galt Museum was selected as the new operator back on February 18, 2016.

More than 5,000 items will be taken to Calgary and no more than 2,000 to Cardston, but a letter has been submitted to the board to keep the original cannon in the city.

“We were approached by the group in Calgary, and basically the Cardston choice puts us closer to our clientele, which consists largely of members from the Blood Tribe.” noted Doran Degenstein, Society Spokesperson.

He explained that the group has no interest in staying due to other unsolved issues with the city.

Degenstein added that they have to wait on the Calgary group to make the official announcement on where the site will be, but expects development to take up to a year to complete.

The Cardston site will hopefully be open on Main Street by June 1st.
