ALBERTA – Alberta’s NDP government is hoping to make it easier for survivors of child sexual abuse to receive specialized healing services.

On Thursday (June 16), Human Services Minister Irfan Sabir announced an investment of over $1.7 million in the Family and Community Safety Program in the fight to end child sexual abuse.

Grant funding will support three existing Child Advocacy Centres in Calgary Edmonton and Grande Prairie and kick-start four new centres in Lethbridge, Fort McMurray, Lloydminister and Red Deer.

In a press release, Sabir promised to continue to support and to work with community partners to stop child sexual abuse and exploitation from happening.

Sheldon Kennedy, Director, Sheldon Kennedy Child Advocacy Centre said that he applauded the Minister for his leadership in making child abuse a top priority in Alberta.

“By investing in prevention and early intervention we truly have the opportunity to turn the lives of our young people and their families around in a timely and efficient manner. The Child Advocacy Centre model, based on proven cross-ministry collaboration, also ensures that negative downstream impacts, both human and economic, are reduced,” Kennedy said.
