LETHBRIDGE – The Alberta Order of Excellence Council released its list of eight distinguished Albertans soon to become members, and one Lethbridge name made it this year.

Leroy Little Bear was born and raised on the Blood Indian Reserve, just 70-km outside of Lethbridge. He became one of the first Native students to complete his studies at the University of Lethbridge, graduating with his Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1971.

Little Bear returned to the University after finishing his Juris Doctor Degree in 1975 in Utah, becoming a founding member of Canada’s first Native American Studies Department. He remained a researcher and chaired the department in Lethbridge until his retirement in 1997.

Since then, he went on to become Director of the Harvard University Native American Program, aided in the creation of the Bachelor of Management in First Nations Governance program at the U-of-L, published a number of books and remains a champion and teacher within the local First Nations community.

The Order of Excellence Council is now recognizing Little Bear for his outstanding provincial, national and international impact.

The other seven nominees include:

Barry Bultz, Calgary

Linda Hughes, Edmonton

Sheldon Kennedy, Calgary

Michael Massey, St. Albert

Paulette Patterson, Grande Prairie

Shirley Penner, Calgary

Bill Yuill, Medicine Hat

There will be an investiture ceremony for all eight on October 19 in Edmonton. These inductees will bring membership of the Council to 157.
