Former premier Jim Prentice has died in a plane crash, the office of the federal opposition leader confirmed to Lethbridge News Now Friday morning.

Prentice was one of four people killed when a small plane went down Thursday night shortly after taking off from Kelowna, B.C. The flight was bound for Springbank, near Calgary. Investigators from the Transportation Safety Board are on their way to the scene.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was in Stand Off, Alberta for a public appearance and meeting with Blood Tribe Chief and Council. He had the following to say upon hearing of the former Premier’s passing.

Prentice was first elected to Parliament in a Calgary riding in 2004, and served several positions in the cabinet of Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

In 2014 he was elected leader of the Alberta Progressive Conservatives and became premier, succeeding Alison Redford. He resigned following his party’s defeat to the NDP in May 2015.
