Screening remains the forefront of breast cancer awareness

ALBERTA – Although October is quickly drawing to a close, the Canadian Cancer Society is still pushing the importance of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Community Engagement Coordinator for the Alberta and Northwest Territories division, Anne Walker, says screening and awareness are the cornerstones of the annual campaign, and cannot be underrated.

“Any kind of awareness is important when it comes to any kind of cancer,” she stressed. “What we know is that any cancers that are detected early are treated with a more positive outcome. Breast cancer is so prevalent that we like to have these campaigns that help us promote that.”

She also suggested regular exercise, maintaining a healthy body weight and limiting alcohol and smoking as ways to further prevent many forms of cancer.

However, prevention is only one component of awareness. It also focuses on effective supports for those currently going through a treatment journey.

According to Walker, the Cancer Society is just one agency among many across Canada and Alberta that patients can reach out to. Though she did say that the society always provides current and valid information through its cancer information service.

Other highly-recommended options include the volunteer driver program where patients can be picked up and taken to their treatment appointments free of charge, wig lending services offered in a number of cities and other groups that connect cancer patients for emotional support.

Walker noted that about 52-per cent of donations to the society are typically utilized to improve such support services and programs.

Another 36-per cent of those funds are used for research, while a smaller portion goes toward advocacy and staffing.

While the Canadian Cancer Society accepts donations year-round, Walker says it usually collects the most money during October. To make your donation or to find out more about breast cancer awareness, visit www.cancer.ca.
