Oct 22, 2016 | 12:11 PM

WATERTON – Rocking Heart Ranch is present its 2nd annual Weanling Challenge on Oct. 22 in Fort Macleod.

Youth 15 years-of-age and up will show off their horsemanship skills and the work they have done with a weanling colt from the ranch over the last three weeks by competing for the Grand Champion.

Melody Garner-Skiba, 5th generation on Rocking Heart Ranch said that the event Championship promotes intergenerational talent to work together and learn from one another.

“We feel by holding a weanling competition and encouraging that connection with the animals, we are providing an outlet for these trainers to show their skills while building their confidence at all age levels.”

The event will provide a course with a series of required elements to showcase how the trainers have worked with the horses on fundamentals as well as a freestyle portion.

The required elements will focus on basic groundwork such as loading into a trailer; being able to pick up their feet, leading them through a gate, all examples of basic fundamentals that are crucial to having a reliable horse.

Each individual trainer can decide what they would like to do for their freestyle element and this is their chance to show off the sizzle of their training.

All of this will be judged by two independent judges with the goal of awarding 3 prizes in both the ladies and youth categories.

Rocking Heart Ranch LTD. is a family run ranch established in 1905 and located adjacent to Waterton Lakes National Park.
