Forum to teach about assistive devices for disabled residents

Dec 14, 2016 | 3:29 PM

LETHBRIDGE – The Lethbridge Chapter of the Tetra Society of North America will be reaching out to residents with disabilities on Friday (Dec. 16), looking to create custom mobility devices.

The non-profit organization builds unique devices that allows those living with disabilities to gain more independence in their every day tasks. They can be constructed for any number of reasons, including communication, eating, sports, education and employment.

The Tetra Society will be hosting an assistive devices forum, open to the public, at the Multicultural Centre this coming Friday (Dec. 16) from 1 to 3 p.m. to discuss project ideas. They’ll also be accepting applications for technical volunteers who would like to help build projects in the future.

“The more independence one can do for themselves, the greater esteem and self-worth that individual gets, and the richer the community becomes,” noted Chris Schamber, Lethbridge chapter coordinator.

Schamber started with the Tetra Society in late 2015, and has already helped six local people with devices. He added that he hopes to help at least four to eight clients per year in the future.

If you can’t make it to the assitive devices forum, he says the next best option is to visit the Lethbridge chapter section on the Tetra Society website
