Man accused of attempted murder and sexual assault fires lawyer again

May 26, 2017 | 11:10 AM

LETHBRIDGE – For the second time in less than two months, 20-year old Denzel Dre Colton Bird has fired his lawyer.

Bird – who faces charges of attempted murder, aggravated sexual assault, sexual assault with a weapon, aggravated assault, and break and enter – appeared via CCTV from the Lethbridge Correctional Centre Friday morning (May 26), at which point he stated that he no longer wants Greg White to represent him.

The same thing happened on Apr. 6, with White being released from the case for the first time, but Bird did an about-face two weeks later and rehired White.

During Friday’s appearance, Bird told the court that he needed time to work with Legal Aid so he could hire a new lawyer, and asked for an adjournment to the end of June.

Citing delays to this point already, both the Crown and judge noted that they would like to see things move along faster, and the matter was set over one week to June 2. The Crown added that they have been ready to proceed for some time, and that it should be noted the delay is at the request of the accused.

Bird was arrested and charged in October 2016, for an alleged attack on a 25-year-old Lethbridge woman.

Police say the victim was walking to work on the morning of Sept. 30, 2016, when she was struck with a weapon, dragged into the alley off 6 Avenue South and sexually assaulted. They stated that the victim and the accused didn’t know each other and it is believed to have been random.

She has since returned home, following months of treatment in a Calgary hospital.
