“Semester at Sea” scholarship applications now open to U of L students thanks to Brawn Family Foundation Donation
LETHBRIDGE – Students at the University of Lethbridge can now apply to win a scholarship for the world famous “Semester at Sea” program, thanks to the generosity of the Brawn Family Foundation.
The Foundation will fund one $30,000 trip for one student per year, according to one of the Foundation’s Directors, Robert Brawn.
“That covers most of the cost. I think it’s an opportunity for them to develop skills that they wouldn’t have just staying at a university.”
Brawn says two of his children and three of his grandchildren have taken part in the program and have come back with a wealth of world experience.
“It was very worthwhile going. They each had difference experiences… they really did appreciate and came back with a much better feeling of what the world was all about… This is a chance for us to give back to students that experience.”
The program, which was founded in 1963, consists of a 100-plus-day voyage around the world visiting anywhere from 10 to 15 countries. It allows students to learn about cultural and bio-geography, comparative financial institutions, the arts and a number of other internationally related courses tailored to any number of countries.
Each year, 2,000 students live on and travel aboard a 10 deck, 590 foot ship called the MV World Odessy.
Students who apply for the international voyage, must be in at least their second year of study, have completed a minimum of 10 courses, achieve a minimum 2.75 GPA and complete an essay question.
The Brawn Family also sponsors a student from the University of Calgary each year.
