LETHBRIDGE – The Atrium of University Hall at the University of Lethbridge was bustling this morning (April 4) as the Omicron-Xi Chapter of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity held its 13th Annual Headshave for Cancer event.

The event is running until 3 p.m. this afternoon, and so far, event manager Jared Sandham says fundraising has been going pretty well.

“We did door to door canvassing for about the last month and a half and that brought us in about $2,500. From online donations, we tracked about $7,500, and with what we’ve received today we’re closing in on $12,000,” Sandham said.

In 2015, over 400 volunteers took part in the what has become one of the largest charity fundraisers at the U of L and this year’s event looked to exceed those numbers.

Sandham says last year they raised $13,000, and since 2006 they’ve donated a quarter million towards cancer and cancer research.

“My goal for this year was to get about $15,000 so I’m feeling confident that we’re going to make it,” he continued. “We’re just taking it hour by hour now, and watch the donations roll in.”

The Omicron-Xi chapter has existed at the U of L since 2005, becoming an officially chartered Chapter of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity in December 2006.

Since then, the chapter has grown to be one of the largest charity fundraising clubs at the university.

Sandham says the Headshave for Cancer event is done in partnership with the Canadian Cancer Society and its mission to help create awareness for cancer support and research.

“How that worked is Kappa Sigma, our chapter at the University, went and had a quick conversation with our cancer rep Amanda, who’s here, to set up the partnership. She’s awesome and has really helped us out the last couple of years. She’s the one who collects the donations, and all the proceeds go to the Cancer Society,” Sandham stated.
