LETHBRIDGE: A 41-year old Lethbridge man charged with manslaughter has elected trial by judge and jury.

In September of 2014, police responded to a report that a 37-year old woman had been assaulted by a male acquaintance along the 400 block of 5 Street South. They arrived to find Cynthia Pearl Badarm with a group of people, and while they were talking to her she experienced medical distress and was taken to hospital.

Police tracked down Lucien Maurice Crane Chief that night, charged him with assault and released him.

The following day however, police were notified that Badarm had died in hospital, and an autopsy determined that she died as a result of blunt force trauma.

Police launched a search for Crane Chief, and finally found him thanks to a tip from a member of the public. The charge was initially upgraded to second degree murder, but later reduced to manslaughter.

The trial has been scheduled to run from September 26 to October 21, 2016.
