Milder Winter Weather Favourable for Local New Home Construction in January
LETHBRIDGE: Lethbridge continues to snub its nose at the provincial trend in new home starts.
Our city was the only one in the province to post an increase in new home starts last month. During January, there were a combined 53 single and multi-family homes started in our city, compared to 32 during the same month last year.
During 2015, Lethbridge and Edmonton were consistently the only cities posting increased home starts However, Edmonton saw its new home starts drop by two-thirds last month, compared to January of 2015. Every other city in the province has also seen significant declines.
Across Alberta’s seven major urban areas, new home construction was down by about 1500 units last month. With the exception of Lethbridge and Edmonton, the other five centres had noted a drop in new home construction in eight of the final months of 2015.
