LETHBRIDGE – Alberta Health Services is addressing minor issues with the Syrian refugees in Lethbridge.

Medical Health Officer Vivien Suttorp says in general the population of refugees that have come to the city are healthy, as they went through major health screenings overseas before arrivial.

Suttorp explains within two weeks of being in Lethbridge – families go to a multi-displinary clinic.

“We’re seeing quite significant oral health needs.  Dental caries [and] abcesses as an example. We are reviewing all immunizations of individuals and offering all the immunizations as to the immunization schedule in Alberta.”

Suttorp adds a large population of Syrians smoke cigarettes so they are trying to help the refugees quit the unhealthy and expensive habit.

111 government assisted and 35 privately sponsored refugees are on the ground in Lethbridge.

Lethbridge is anticipated to have 240 government assisted and up to 100 privately sponsored refugees by year’s end.
