Calgary Man Charged after Spike Belt Used to End Pursuit on Highway 3
LETHBRIDGE: RCMP had to use a spike-belt to stop a vehicle following a high speed pursuit on Highway-3.
The incident began just outside of Lethbridge around 11:30 Monday morning, when a member of the Lethbridge RCMP Traffic Unit narrowly escaped being run down by a car that rammed his police cruiser, after it failed to stop near Highway-3.
While on patrol, the officer saw the driver of a silver Honda Civic commit a traffic offence and attempted a traffic stop of the vehicle. Instead of stopping, the Honda Civic continued driving with the police vehicle following it along Highway 3. The suspect vehicle turned off of the highway and drove into the yard of a construction company in Lethbridge. When the officer, realized that the entrance was the only access to the yard, he stopped his vehicle at the entrance-way.
After the suspect drove around the yard, the civic drove into the passenger side of the police vehicle with enough force to move it sideways, jarring the police officer, who jumped out of the vehicle and discharged his firearm at the Civic.
