Public Meeting to Address Parental Concerns in Sexual Identity Policy

Feb 24, 2016 | 11:33 AM

LETHBRIDGE – A petition from a number of parents has prompted a public meeting regarding School District 51’s Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Policy.

The policy passed first reading by the school board on Tuesday.

However, spokesperson, Genny Steed, says over 2300 signatures were collected within three weeks, with more still coming in.

Steed notes that parents aren’t happy with the policy’s wording at this point.

“We as parents are looking for some language that protects parental rights, as well as some protection from the guidelines for best practice [from the province]. Some of those things contained some suggestions that parents are alarmed to be reading… As well, [we want] a policy that is inclusive to the needs and rights of all students instead of a sub group in the population.”

A new six person committee will be formed from the public meeting. It will include four elected parent representatives and 2 school board appointees which will continue to overlook the final creation of the policy.
