LETHBRIDGE – Family Services accepted what they call a “pay it forward” act from one refugee community to another.

The Free Vietnamese Cultural Society recently held a New Year’s Celebration and, with the generous support of the community, raised $2,015 for Syrian refugees.

Event Organizer, Dat Tran, hopes this money will make the newcomers feel welcome. “As a group, we felt it was the least we could do. We went through the same, like the Syrian refugees did, 38 years ago. We were welcomed warmly by the Canadian people and the people of Lethbridge.”

“In Vietnamese, the word ‘Canada’ translates to ‘big family’. It means we’re living together peacefully regardless of race or nationality.”

Director of Immigrant Services, Sarah Amies, says there’s still so many things that federal funding can’t cover. She wants to use this doantion to organize some fun activities for the refugees.
