RCMP Warn of Ongoing Tax Scam

Mar 4, 2016 | 1:38 PM

LETHBRIDGE: Raymond-Magrath RCMP are warning of an ongoing scam, in which fraudsters are impersonating Canada Revenue Agency employees.

They call or email, saying the victim either has a tax refund or owes money in back-taxes. The fraudsters then ask the victim to send money or give them personal information, sometimes adding that a warrant has been issued and they will be arrested if they don’t comply.

The fraudsters are also able to ‘spoof’ the numbers on call display, to make it appear that it’s coming from the CRA or an Ottawa area code, and have even set up a fake CRA website to direct you to, where you are once again asked for personal information.

The detachment noted that with tax season upon us, they have been receiving several calls daily from local people who have been targeted by the scam.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding a similar call or email, you should call the Canada Revenue Agency at 1-800-959-8281.

You can also call your local police for advice if you believe something is suspicious, and you are encouraged to get in touch with the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501 or on their website at www.antifraudcentre.ca to report fraud attempts.
