Trial to Begin Monday for Couple Charged in the Death of Their Child

Mar 4, 2016 | 1:20 PM

LETHBRIDGE: The first evidence will be entered Monday morning, in the trial for a couple charged in the death of their 19-month old son.

David and Collet Stephan were formally arraigned Friday morning in front of the jury, with both entering not guilty pleas to a charge of failing to provide the necessities of life.

The first week of the trial was spent with the jury absent, as a voir dire was held to examine the admissibility of some evidence.

In March of 2012, paramedics were called when a 19-month old boy stopped breathing. He was sent to the Calgary Children’s Hospital where he died five days later.

Following an investigation, the Glenwood couple was charged almost a year later in 2013 with Failing to Provide the Necessities of Life. A press release from Raymond RCMP stated that officers believe the child had become ill in February of 2012.

The trial is scheduled to run until March 24.
