Two More Deaths in Southern Alberta Due to Influenza

MEDICINE HAT:  Influenza continues to hit Albertans hard this year, as two more deaths have been confirmed in the Alberta Health South Zone.

The latest deaths were two individuals from Calgary who were both under the age of 65.

Dr. Vivian Suttorp says the dominant H-1-N-1 strain of the influenza virus targets younger, healthy people along with pregnant women.

“We’re seeing individuals at a younger age with lab confirmed influenza and hospitalization with intensive care requirement.”

Suttorp says more than 800 people have been hospitalized and 15 people have died of the flu this season in Alberta.

As of the first week in March, almost 3,000 flu cases have been confirmed in the province. That number jumped from 500 cases in the last week of February.

Influenza shots are still available at most pharmacies.
