MEDICINE HAT:  Police in Medicine Hat have talked to a person in Saskatchewan about death threats made against four high school students.

Inspector Brent Secondiak says the individual is still a strong person of interest in the case, however now there is possibly a second person involved.

Secondiak says, “We’re still doing the interviews, checking physical information and IP addresses, internet web sites, doing searches on phones and computers. The physical information over the next few days will tell us more on a potential suspect.”

Since news of the threat on broke on Monday, more than 20 people have come forward saying they has received similar threats. Police say there have also been similar threats over the past few weeks and months as well.

Meanwhile, Staff Sergeant Brian Christmann says it is very important that kids talk to their parents and pass all information about threats like this on to police. Christmann says, “if they are receiving messaging on their phone that isn’t something they would normally get, they should tell someone.”

Christmann says that someone could be a parent, another adult or the community liaison officer at their school. Christmann says, “at some point when your gut instinct is telling you something is amiss, that is probably the time to call the police.”

Several students across the city say they didn’t take these types of threats seriously in the past.

Courtney Rath says some of her friends thought the recent threat was a joke or internet spam. The Grad 11 student says, “ maybe they were afraid to tell their parents because all the parents these days are like, oh that’s the internet, social media is bad and I think they felt like maybe their parents would not take it that seriously either.”
