LETHBRIDGE – School District 51 has requested over $103-million collectively in various modernizations and new school constructions from Alberta Education.

Following a comprehensive review of educational and facility needs, these are the projects they listed that need to be funded over the next three years:

1. South Lethbridge Elementary School (2017/2018) – New Construction – Core Only, 600-Student School, $15.5 million.

2. West Lethbridge Garry Station Elementary School (2018/2019) – New Construction – Core Only, 600-Student School, $15.5 million.

3. South west Lethbridge Elementary (2018/2019) – New Construction – Core Only, 600-Student School,
$15.5 million.

4. Galbraith Elementary School (2017/2018) – Modernization, $14.4 million.

5. Senator Buchanan Elementary School (2017/2018) – Modernization, $8.8 million.

6. Westminster Elementary School (2017/2018) – Modernization, $9.3 million.

7. Nicholas Sheran Community School (2018/2019) – Modernization, $13 million.

8. Park Meadows Elementary School (2018/2019) – Modernization, $11.2 million.

The district has identified that the biggest modernization project in their 2017-2020 Capital Plan will be the preservation of the 104-year old Galbraith Elementary School. The South Lethbridge Elementary School is set as the largest new construction project.

Construction of the three new elementary schools is also needed to address overcrowding at existing schools.

There are currently so many students in the district’s south elementary schools and all west side schools, that regular assemblies can’t be held because it would violate fire and building codes.

District 51 currently runs 19 schools in the city.
