April is Daffodil Month For the Canadian Cancer Society

LETHBRIDGE:   April has become known as the month of first growth.  There is the crocus, the harbinger of spring, followed closely by the tulip. However, April is also known as Daffodil month, the brilliant yellow symbol associated with the Canadian Cancer Society’s annual spring fundraising campaign.

The nation-wide daffodil campaign assists the Cancer Society in supporting research.  It also provides support services for those living with cancer and creates prevention strategies for all Canadians.

The Society launched its month-long campaign on Thursday at Marquis Flower Shop, where Cancer Society staff and volunteers placed daffodils in dozens of arrangements, ready to be delivered to businesses around the city.

Canadian Cancer Society representative Lindsay French, who was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma when she was 17 but, is healthy five years later, was on hand for the event. She noted that the daffodil is a symbol of hope against a disease which has touched many people.  She is a living example that cancer can be beaten.

The statistics prove that survival rates have gone up. The average survival rate now is 63 per cent – a rate that has more than doubled since the 1950’s.

As you are out shopping through-out the weekend, you can buy fresh cut daffodils for just $6 a bunch at various locations in Lethbridge.
