Changes Coming for Seniors Home Adaptation and Repair Act

Apr 6, 2016 | 4:03 PM

EDMONTON Alberta is introducing new rules to give loans to seniors for home repairs and renovations to help them age in place in their communities.

The changes are contained in a bill introduced in the legislature on Wednesday by Seniors Minister Lori Sigurdson.

The Seniors Home Adaptation and Repair Act will allow Sigurdson’s department to hand out loans to homeowners over 65 for up to 40-thousand dollars for home improvements.

The improvements need to be linked to quality of life, such as walk-in tubs, wheelchair ramps, stair lifts, or room renovations.

But they won’t exclude basic improvements like roofs, replacement furnaces or hot water tanks.

Low-income seniors who don’t qualify for the loans could be eligible for grants for critical necessities like furnaces and water heaters.
