Aggie Days to Teach Kids All About Food Production

Apr 13, 2016 | 11:17 AM

LETHBRIDGE – It’s just about time for the tenth annual UFA Aggie Days trade show!

It runs over April 26 – 27 from 9am to 3pm, with 36 exhibitors and nine interactive exhibits to enjoy. The most popular being the Andy Pittman sheep shearing demonstration.

Aggie Days came to be after a noticeable amount of kids were being brought to Ag Expo to learn about agriculture.

To date, 33 schools from Lethbridge and surrounding area, ranging primarily from kindergarten to grade 9, have already registered. That amounts to roughly 2,000 students in total with more expected.

Marketing Manager, Doug Kryzanowski, notes that this is a fun event to get kids thinking about where their food comes from. “Aggie Days is a bit ahead of the curve because we have a lot of chicken producers, potato producers, that kind of stuff. There’s more of a push now for ground to table [education], and for young people to know that not all your food, or any of your food, comes in a frozen package or you have to go into a store to buy it.”

Kryzanowski says this program’s popularity only continues to grow, from 1,700 youths in year one to nearly 5,000 in attendance last year.

Students who register through their teachers are also eligible to win one of two $500 Registered Education Savings Plans.

The event takes place in the North Pavilion at Exhibition Park, and is free for the public to attend.
