City Council To Resurrect Conversation on Full-Time Positions

LETHBRIDGE – A Lethbridge City Councillor said she will speak towards the possibility of creating full-time positions for Councillors at a discussion on May 2nd.

They’ve served on a part-time basis since 1969.

During the November 2014 budget debates, the question of full-time contracts arose.

As a result Council allocated $75,000 for the city clerk to put together an ad-hoc citizen’s panel and a consultant to look at the validity of transitioning from part-time to full time positions.

By November 2015, Councillor Joe Mauro brought forth a resolution to halt consultation, but resume ad-hoc discussion this month.

Councillor Bridget Mearns said after robust conversations, a majority appeared in favour of full-time positions.

“We need to now focus on whether concern lies in the cost, whether councillors want greater input or whether an amendment to the date is needed before a decision is met, so we can inform before individuals decide to run.”

Mearns credits increased responsibility as the primary motive. She said for the most part, the position is more than a 20 hour commitment each week.

Edmonton, Calgary and Strathcona County possess full-time Councillors already.
