More Cash for Student Summer Jobs

CANADA – Students are expected to fair better in their seasonal job hunt this year.

Minister of Employment, Workforce Development and Labour, MaryAnn Mihychuk, announced April 19, that a record number of applications have been received under the newly expanded Canada Summer Jobs program.

The number of employers interested in hiring students this year has soared by almost 30-per cent.

In all, just under 37,000 job applications have been submitted by employers.

This comes after the Liberal government’s promise to provide support for employers to hire up to 70-thousand students, doubling the 34-thousand positions funded in 2015.

The annual budget for the Summer Jobs program is up to $113-million to be distributed each of the next three years beginning in 2016-17.

This is the first increase to the program’s annual budget of $107.5-million since 2009.

Since it’s inception in 2007, the program has helped over 330,000 students find jobs.
