City Council Approves Plan for Potential Water Rationing

May 2, 2016 | 4:24 PM

LETHBRIDGE – A bylaw amendment has been approved by City Council, allowing the City’s new Water Rationing Action Plan to go into effect, if needed.

Concerns of a potential water shortage came before Council in February when the plan was first presented for consideration.

Lower than normal precipitation since then, a forecast that doesn’t call for much more rain and the current state of the Oldman River Reservoir and St. Mary River Reservoir, prompted council to vote in favour of the plan.

The Water Rationing Action Plan places a major emphasis on communication with the community during a water shortage, helping residents understand exactly what is expected of them during water rationing. It also carries fines for those who fail to comply with a water rationing order.

Short-term water emergencies and long-term shortages are also addressed in the plan, which is based on similar ones already in place in California and BC.
