Specialized Infant Formula Neocate Now Subsidized by Government

ALBERTA – Parents of infants who cannot consume regular baby formula because of complex food allergies or medical conditions can breathe a sigh of relief financially.

The Alberta government announced the launch of a benefit program that will provide coverage for the medically required, specialized infant formula Neocate.

The average cost of Neocate is approximately $690 per month.

“Some babies have to rely on specialized infant formulas to meet nutritional needs. But these formulas are costly, medically necessary and, in many case, cause families considerable financial strain,” Associate Minister of Health Brandy Payne said.

While the program does not cover the entire cost of the product, it does significantly reduce the cost for families prescribed the formula.

Families that require the formula will have to apply for the government’s non-group coverage, and will be required to pay a monthly premium between $82 and $118, as well as a payment of up to $25 per prescription.

To be eligible for coverage, Neocate must be prescribed by, or in consultation with, a paediatrician, a neonatologist or a paediatric gastroenterologist.

Payne said that the coverage is expected to cost the government around $80,000 dollars each year.
