Southeast Structure Plan Draws Public Concerns; Portable Signs Bylaw Defeated

May 3, 2016 | 3:14 PM

LETHBRIDGE – A public hearing on the city’s Southeast Area Structure Plan drew a large crowd on Monday. Those who registered to speak at the three-hour long hearing, voiced their concerns about the proposed 680 hectare development.

The plan provides a very general direction on how the area east of 43rd Street can be developed in the future, which also must be compliant with a number of other legislations itself. (Further details on the Structure Plan can be found here.)

Many of the public’s comments were similar. Most expressed that they’d like to see Option B chosen, which would put a more residential emphasis on a special planning area north of 24 Avenue.

However, Option B does not currently comply with the Integrated Community Sustainability Plan (ICSP) and Municipal Development Plan (MDP), which could potentially take up to four years to correct.

After hearing a presentation from Planning and Development Services and all other concerns, council voted to postpone the final decision until May 16th.

Council also defeated the new Portable Signs Bylaw in a different decision.

Back on April 18, another lengthy public hearing was held in regard to a bylaw that could have included changes to digital display controls, restricting which intersections signs can be placed near and how fines and non-compliance are dealt with.

It was ultimately defeated, as council agreed that it needs to be re-visited by the Municipal Planning Commission to work out some final details that were still of some concern.
