Wildrose suspends MLA from caucus over Twitter insult about Wynne

EDMONTON – A brouhaha over comments made about Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne in the Alberta legislature escalate Friday night with the Opposition Wildrose party suspending the M-L-A who made them.

On Thursday Wildrose finance critic Derek Fildebrandt denounced Ontario as a needy fiscal basket case, while Wynne was sitting in the legislature galley.

In the wake of widespread criticism for the slight, the party said it didn’t regret calling Ontario a fiscal basket case, but did regret saying it to Wynne’s face.

Then late Friday, Wildrose Leader Brian Jean (jeen) issued a terse news release saying Fildebrandt had been suspended from caucus for making “an unacceptable comment on social media.”

Fildebrandt had responded to a supporter on his Facebook page, who congratulated him on — quote — telling “the truth about Mr. Wynne or whatever the hell she identifies as.”

Fildebrandt replied; “Proud to have constituents like you,” but he later insisted that he’d misread the posting and that the insult against Wynne, who is openly gay, was entirely against his views.
