Blood Tribe Hosts Environmental Summit

Jun 1, 2016 | 1:19 PM

STAND-OFF – The third annual Kainai Ecosystem Protection Agency (KEPA) Summit is underway on the Blood Reserve.

This year’s theme is ‘Climate Change Resilience and Adaptation’, with a focus on exchanging knowledge and spreading new ideas to help protect the ecosystem in southern Alberta.

“What we’re doing is talking and making proposals with government and other funders to get something going towards holding more smaller meetings, and getting more input on what climate change adaptation and resiliency would look like for Kainai,” explained KEPA committee member Kansie Fox.

The event brings together academic researchers, scientists and scholars with the environmental science community with Blood Tribe Chief and Council, KEPA members and elders.

Fox explained that networking has been a major benefit that has come from past summits.

“A lot of relationships were developed and that’s really important for environmental initiatives to get started, so we’ve built ties with the Crown of the Continent, the Oldman Watershed Council, other First Nations who are doing environmental work.”

The summit runs until Friday.
