Heat Warning for Southern Alberta

Jun 6, 2016 | 5:36 AM

LETHBRIDGE -Lots of sunshine and high temperatures are expected this week in Lethbridge.

That has caused Environment Canada to issue a heat warning for a large portion of southern Alberta.

It stretches from Fort Macleod to the Saskatchewan border and from the US border up to Ponoka.

With temperatures in the low to mid 30’s this week, Environment Canada is encouraging you to take precautions to avoid heat illnesses.

They say to drink plenty of liquids, especially water, before you feel thirsty to reduce the risk of dehydration.

Frequently visit neighbours, friends and older family members, especially those who are chronically ill, to make sure that they are cool and hydrated.

If you are taking medication or have a health condition, ask your doctor or pharmacist if it increases your health risk in the heat and follow their recommendations.

Reschedule or plan outdoor activities during cooler parts of the day.

Take a break from the heat by spending a few hours in a cool place. It could be a tree-shaded area, swimming facility or an air-conditioned spot such as a public building, shopping mall, grocery store, place of worship or public library.

Never leave people or pets in your care inside a parked vehicle or in direct sunlight.
