Southern Alberta Group Supports Mandatory Helmets for ATV Riders

LETHBRIDGE – A southern Alberta organization is supporting proposed provincial legislation that’s expected in the fall, regarding ATV helmets and safety.

Alberta Transportation Minister Brian Mason explained on Tuesday that they are just wrapping up the consultation process, and will be looking at a number of factors, including whether or not the rules would apply on private property and farming operations.

Lethbridge News Now contacted the Crowsnest Pass Quad Squad Association, which has over 250 members, to see if such legislation would impact them.

“Our club is all about safety and enjoying the outdoors,” stated Melissa Verbass. “If we have scheduled rides, it is mandatory to wear a helmet to go on our rides, if there’s no helmet then you’re not allowed to participate.

“The way we feel, whether it’s private land or public land, if you’re on an off-highway vehicle, we believe it’s mandatory to wear helmets.”

Following the deaths of three children in ATV incidents in 2015, Mason stated the province would review ATV safety for children. He confirmed on Tuesday that the legislation will be brought forward during the fall sitting of the legislature.
